Descriptions

One line

Frontworks is an automation-RTS hybrid about building a war factory on a hostile alien world.

Short

Build a war factory on a hostile alien world. Extract raw ore and refine it into complex components. Automate logistics, manufacturing and army recruitment. Defend against huge waves of native robots and alien wildlife, then send your army to raze enemy bases for planetary domination.

Long

Frontworks is an automation-RTS hybrid game about building a war factory and commanding vast armies. Extract raw materials, set up logistics, automate manufacturing and troop recruitment, then send your forces to seize and control ore deposits in a never-ending cycle of expansion.

As an expedition sent by a hive-mind civilization, you are tasked with turning an unexplored planet into a war mega-factory. After landing, you quickly discover this world is far from uninhabited: crawling alien wildlife mindlessly sabotages your construction efforts, and the planet's vast resources are already claimed by a militaristic robot faction. The hive expects results — you must bring this planet into the fold, or be destroyed and forgotten.

Key features

Free to quote or reproduce, in full or in part.

  • A factory that feeds a war. Every belt, smelter and assembler exists to manufacture an army. Units are built from components on a production line, not trained from a menu.
  • Direct army command. RTS control layered on top of the factory — move squads, hold a line with turrets, and assault enemy bases scattered across the world.
  • Belts, inserters and intersections. Perpendicular belts cross without mixing their contents, splitters divide flow, and inserters come in two lengths, the long one reaching two tiles.
  • A power grid that degrades instead of failing. Simple buildings burn coal directly; the rest run on electricity. Under-generate and everything runs proportionally slower rather than shutting off.
  • Roughly 50 materials. Ore is mined by worker bots or automated drills, smelted in furnaces, and turned into components in metal printers and assemblers.
  • Research you have to fight for. Tech Packs manufactured in your factory feed mega-computers called Decryptors. Some technology groups are held by the enemy and are recovered by destroying their bases.
  • Two hostile factions. Alien wildlife attacks in great numbers; a militaristic robot faction already claims the planet's resources and defends them with bases of its own.
  • A procedurally generated world. A desert planet of mesas that block movement and deposits of iron, copper, coal and stone.

Terms of use

Written out so nobody has to email and wait. This covers everything on this page and everything in the zip.

You may

no permission needed
  • Use the screenshots, logos, key art and trailer footage in coverage of Frontworks — articles, reviews, previews, videos, streams, podcasts and social posts.
  • Monetise that coverage. Ad revenue, sponsorships, Patreon, paid publications — all fine, and no revenue share is claimed.
  • Crop, scale, recompress and overlay your own commentary, captions or channel branding.
  • Embed or clip the trailer, and record your own footage from any build you are given access to.
  • Keep doing all of the above indefinitely. This grant is not withdrawn later.

Please don't

ask first
  • Redraw the logo, change its colours or stretch it. Scaling it is fine; editing it is not.
  • Use the name or the art in a way that suggests Frontworks endorses, sponsors or is affiliated with you or your product.
  • Sell the assets themselves — merchandise, stock libraries, asset packs, NFTs, or training data sold on.
  • Present the art as your own work, or pass a screenshot off as footage from a different game.
